Where it happens
Nalanda sits between the Rajgir hills and a belt of ponds, canals and mango orchards — dry forest on one side, wetland on the other, and a town in the middle.
Dry deciduous forest, leopard and hyena records, and a fire season that runs from February to June.
Wintering waders and ducks, and the cleanup drives that keep the banks usable.
Asian openbill and egret colonies on trees inside residential areas — monitored with the residents' consent.
